balenaFin and COVID-19

 

UPDATE as of March 23rd, 2020

 

As directed by the Italian government, our balenaFin manufacturing and fulfillment partners based in the Lombardy region of Italy will be closed as of March 26th and will reopen April 6th at the earliest. The closure may be extended if required. 

 

In response, we plan to move more of our inventory to our warehouse in Athens, Greece and will fulfill all orders from that location for the time being. Since the team in Athens is still relatively new to the fulfillment process, and currently only able to access the warehouse two days per week, we expect this to result in a slight delay to our usual fulfillment times. 

 

As mentioned below, we have good inventory of off-the-shelf balenaFins and accessories for developer kits, so we don’t anticipate most customers being impacted by the manufacturing closure. That said, any customers placing orders for custom / depopulated balenaFins will experience a delay, as we will not be able to manufacture any boards until April 6th at the earliest. 

 

The safety of our team and partners remains our highest priority, and we will continue to adjust our approach in order to protect their well-being, and to comply with all government directives. We wanted to take a moment to share how we’re responding to the unfolding COVID-19 outbreak. 


We manufacture and fulfill balenaFins in the Lombardy area of Italy, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak. We’ve taken steps to continue operations as normally as possible. 


We have plenty of off-the-shelf balenaFins in stock, and components to manufacture more. We also have compute modules and accessories for developer kits in stock, and are in the process of ordering more to boost our inventory. Our manufacturing partners continue to operate, albeit at reduced capacity, and can meet demand for custom or depopulated balenaFin orders with slightly longer than usual lead times. 


We are currently running low on cases. A component required to assemble the case has had a longer than usual lead time due to COVID-19. We received a batch of the component this week and will be fulfilling orders for cases soon. We also expect to receive more batches of the component over the coming weeks. 


Our fulfillment partners in Italy continue to operate, at reduced capacity, as well. In late February, in anticipation of the growing outbreak in Italy, we moved about half of our inventory to our warehouse in Athens, Greece. We’ve started fulfilling orders from this location to support the warehouse in Italy, and are confident in our ability to continue fulfilling orders during the outbreak from either or both locations. We are taking all the necessary safety precautions in both warehouses. 


As a number of our customers have shifted to working from home, we have also received requests to change shipping locations from a work address to a home address. We’re happy to do what we can to change shipping addresses on orders already out for delivery, and can send new orders directly to customer’s homes if requested. 


At a high level, our business is well capitalized and in good shape, and we aren’t going anywhere. Balena is a resilient company and committed to providing balenaFins to our customers for many years to come. 


We’ll continue to keep this post updated as the situation evolves. Our goal is to maintain our usual level of service, but given the uncertainty of the situation, things could change at any moment. We greatly appreciate everything that our team members on the ground, and our manufacturing and fulfillment partners, are doing to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Their health and safety is our primary concern, and we’ll adjust quickly as needed to protect their well-being.
